Ballarat’s Best Beard & ‘Stache Competition


Ballarat is bringing the beards back! Building on the success of Ballarat’s first ever Beard Competition at Heritage Weekend last year, the 2017 Best Beard & ‘Stache Competition returns as a popular feature.

Hosted at the Hop Temple, with special guests The Nelson Twins (Australia’s Got Talent), there will be four categories including the People’s Choice Award, and a range of great prizes up for grabs.

Don’t despair if your chin is barren, there is still something for everyone with a range of entertainment, food and drink offerings, market stalls and more! Register your beard and compete, or just come along and enjoy a fun and different day out.

Federation University Tweed Ride


Dress in your most dapper and elegant tweed for a ride through the Ballarat autumn streets. Followed by a morning tea at Suttons House of Music.

Bookcare and Book Archiving Workshops


Sonya Macdonald, fine bookbinder and book repairer of Sago on Tuesdays Bindery, will take up residence in the Hooper Room, downstairs at the Ballaarat Mechanics Insitute. Come and take part in a workshop about how to care for and clean your treasured books, with DIY book care kits for sale. Bring your old books for free consultation on how to best store, protect and care for them, and options for repair.

Vintage & Classic Cars


The Vintage & Classic Car Club Ballarat is celebrating a major milestone in its history: its 50th anniversary. Ballarat Heritage Weekend will showcase a range of unique and classic vehicles throughout the CBD, displayed in front of some of Ballarat’s most historic and iconic buildings, and driving the city’s streets.

Come along and see some “Cars of the Stars” – vehicles that have been featured on the big or small screen, from The Doctor Blake Mysteries to Babe.

Bell Ringing


Eight bells cast at Whitechapel foundry in London in the 1860’s hang high in the Town Hall tower, a memorial to Prince Alfred, Ballarat’s first royal visitor and the a son of Queen Victoria. A team of bellringers will practice the ancient art of bellringing on Sunday afternoon.

Board Games Geeks


Uncover the mysteries and meet the weirdos, spooks and cranks of Ballarat’s past. Find your way out of the labyrinth of mining tunnels, play the part of a crooked cop, solve murder mysteries, and take your turn to fight off monsters and ghosts. Fed Uni Arts Academy students have created a series of exciting board games for Heritage Week.
