The Fabulous Fifties at The Mining Exchange


Join Charlotte Smith as she showcases vintage 50’s fashion from the Darnell Collection with celebrity guests Tara Moss (author and host of Sewing Vintage with Tara Moss) and Jacinta Tynan on Saturday, and Emma Birdsall on Sunday. Enjoy an ‘In Conversation’ discussion at 11.30am Saturday with Tara and Jacinta - women who understand the importance and empowerment of fashion in their roles. A frank discussion will include stories about their childhood, their fashion preferences both vintage andin everyday life, and their journey to stardom. Tara and Jacinta will grace the catwalk at 2pm along with local models. 12pm and 2pm Sunday, Emma Birdsall will sing and model on the catwalk along with local models.

Catwalk Parades: Featuring fashions worn for special occasions in the 50’s including flirty, romantic and feminine short and long gowns and stunning accessories from The Darnell Collection. This display brings to life the elegant New Look and the poised women who wore it.

The Fabulous Fifties “Best Dressed” Cocktail & Dance Party


To the beat of Jailhouse Rock and Good Golly, Miss Molly, dance the evening away in your finest vintage apparel. Our celebrity guests will be judging best dressed, best dancer and best couple. Under the vaulted roof of the beautiful Mining Exchange, enjoy vintage cocktails and party food, and revel in the fabulous 50’s at this unique and fun event.

Apron Festival


Stitching together a love of sewing, art, and the handmade, the annual Ballarat Apron Festival returns in a riotous celebration of all things apron. The only apron festival in the world, this year’s event explores ‘A Day in the Life of an Apron in the 1950’s,’ featuring vintage, modern and competition aprons displays, embroidery workshops, art exhibits, face-painting, retro photobooth opportunities, heritage talks as well as an indulgent café and curated Makers Market. See aprons from the ABC Costume Collection, including a special selection from Ballarat’s own The Doctor Blake Mysteries series,with special live music performances by The Mary Gardens.

A showcase of handkerchiefs from hankie lovers in our community. An impressive display of handkerchiefs along with stories of how they were acquired, loved and their fascinating journeys, including the hankies of Sir Robert Menzies.

The Secrets of 50’s glamour will be revealed in 6 snapshots featuring authentic garments from the era. Fashions In Time (FIT), the Ballarat vintage fashion collectors club, have organised a display of garments from foundation through to a night at the ball, and everything in between.

Doctor Blake - Behind the Seams


Meet the team behind Lucien and Jean’s hair, makeup and costumes. Louise McCarthy (costume designer), and John Logue (hair & makeup designer) will discuss how they achieve the show’s vintage look. Program host will be Nicole Jenkins, fashion writer and founder of Melbourne’s Circa Vintage Boutique.
